One climbed the stairs to the second floor to see potted Palm Trees mixed with an art-deco motif, original brick walls and a two-story stage with enclosed DJ area for a setting unlike any other in Milwaukee. This place was Papagaio. Bobby Bell opened it in 1981 at 515 N. Broadway and it soon became known as a go-to bar and hotspot for music acts. Performances from acclaimed bands in the 80s like The Replacements and Hüsker Dü will be remembered for a lifetime. Wednesdays also became gay night at Papagaio, which was otherwise considered a “straight” venue, and a popular alternative to Park Avenue's Sunday gay night. Papagaio was short-lived, but it was one of the best places of Milwaukee's early 80s.
