In the early 1940s, A.J. Moore, a Chicago street preacher, businessman and con man started the Heaven City Hotel on the shores of the Fox River in Mukwonago, WI. He began with a religious commune on the property but with little regular income, the commune disbanded. He then constructed the hotel with the members that remained. It was a luxurious destination with fine dining that housed “female companions” and a regular clientele of mobsters. These underworld types in from Chicago and Milwaukee to the hotel's private air strip for quick weekend getaways. In later years, employees claimed the site had ghosts and reported strange voices, laughter and footsteps with no one in sight.
